SARA

Sara often colors the present moment with the tones of her past experiences. She loses the freshness of the “now” by constantly reliving lost moments. Sara suffers from bouts of guilt, waking up to the repetitive tune of “what if.” What is happening to her Hessed flow? It has been redirected through the prism of the ego. Hessed is flowing, but it is trapped. Sara needs to develop interests that take her out of herself.

GREG

We have already discussed how David represses his Hessed flow and Sara traps hers. Greg, on the other hand, has weakened his Hessed flow by directing it solely to large social issues. He volunteers for an international nonprofit agency, because he is committed to social justice. While this is a laudable goal, he has so depleted his Hessed flow that he is suffering from burnout.

It is clear that each of my friends needs to redirect the Hessed flow so that it will nourish them. When we share our Hessed flow with another, whether it be a relative, friend, or member of the community, we are reestablishing the proper balance of energies.

For example, David could benefit from the intimacy of marriage. The compromises and give and take of a long-term, stable relationship would express his Hessed energy.

Sara, on the other hand, needs to go out into the world and give to others without involving her ego. She would benefit from doing volunteer work with people whose needs are immediate. Giving her time and attention to a terminally ill person in a hospice or a woman in a shelter would enable her to release her Hessed.

Greg should take time off from his volunteer activities and enjoy his friends and family. For example, if he committed to baby-sitting his favorite nephew one evening a week, he would discover the joys of focused Hessed flow.

Because I care about my friends, I try to influence them to change their lives. But I have to beware imposing myself on them, even for their own benefit. In other words, I must manage my own Hessed flow.

The negation of ego is what distinguishes between the desire to control and dominate and the genuine flow of Hessed.
